Welcome to West Dartmoor U3A
West Dartmoor U3A was started in Tavistock, by a small group of enthusiastic people in 1991. They held a launch meeting in November when 47 people became members. Suggestions were made and leaders quickly came forward so that by January 1992 there were already 14 groups. We were fortunate to have such a healthy start. New members are always welcome to bring fresh ideas and help to keep the founding principles alive.
Although U3A stands for University of the Third Age, the word 'University' here has its original meaning of a group of people with similar interests meeting together. There are no academic qualifications required to become a member, the only qualification is that members are all in the situation where they are no longer in full time gainful employment.
We have a good variety of groups, from learning languages, and science discussions to playing scrabble and chess, from walking and visiting interesting landmarks, to art, pottery and photography to mention just a few. We are always looking for new members who are willing to lead new groups.
We have a monthly General Meeting, usually with an invited speaker, which takes place at the Methodist Church Hall on the third Thursday of every month at 10.00 a.m.
Our annual subscription which is payable at the Annual General Meeting in July is £14.50 per person (current rates for 2014 - 2015)
