Welcome to West Dartmoor U3A
West Dartmoor U3A was started in Tavistock in 1991, by a small group of enthusiastic people. They held a launch meeting in the November of that year and 47 people signed up as members. Suggestions were made at the meeting and leaders quickly came forward, so that by January 1992 there were already 14 interest groups formed. We were very fortunate to have such a healthy start.
Although U3A stands for "University of the Third Age, the word University in this context has its original meaning a group of people with similar interests meeting together.
There are no academic qualifications required to become a member, the only qualification is that members are all in the situation where they are no longer in gainful employment. New members are always welcome to bring fresh ideas and help to keep the founding principles alive.
We have a good variety of groups from learning languages and science discussions, to playing scrabble and chess, to walking, art, singing and calligraphy and many more. We are always looking for new members willing to lead groups and provide support to the Committee.
A monthly general meeting is held at 10am on the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Methodist Church Hall with an invited speaker.
The Annual Subscription, payable at the AGM in July, is £14.50 per person (current rates for 2015-2016).
