As many of us will be aware, following Black Lives Matter, there is a debate about whether some of the statues displayed across the UK should remain in place.
Tavistock Local History Society have welcomed this debate, in particular around the statue of Sir Francis Drake situated in Tavistock and hope that it will stimulate many to look more closely at the history and facts surrounding the most famous person born in the town.
The Society are committed to advance the education of the public in relation to the history and heritage of Tavistock and the surrounding area and are appalled by and condemn the abusive treatment still faced by minorities from some of those working on our behalf and believe that Black Lives do Matter.
TLHS will be hosting an illustrated talk given by Michael Turner of the Sir Francis Drake Society via the Zoom online platform on Tuesday 14th July at 7.30pm for its members. ‘Non-members’ are usually welcome to TLHS meetings, so if there are any members of WDU3A who would like to attend this particular meeting about Sir Francis Drake, I will be happy to forward their details to the Secretary.
