Song of the toilet roll by Hazel Arnold
So long I have waited for such adulation
Of my intimate quilting and neat perforation.
Perceiving my talents folk flock to admire me
and empty the shelves as they rush to acquire me,
acknowledge my presence with cries of emotion
then arrange me at home with care and devotion;
flood bathrooms and shelves with my cousins at random
and unroll me in miles with relief and abandon.
Oh honour the toilet roll, shower us with thanks.
Ditch newspaper squares and all lower ranks;
freely appreciate our undoubted finesse –
then join as we celebrate, flushed with success.

Click, click, the turn of a key. Lockdown enshrouds us fevers the brain
ck, ck , clickety click but talking’s allowed, forget those locked jaws and ring out the phone
yack, yack, yackety yack savour the emails that fizz down the airwaves dispelling depression, raising the smiles tap, tap,tapity tap.
Lock in the laughter lock out the gloom lock up the virus lock, stock and barrel
Click, yack, clickety tap.
Savour the stillness the lack of pollution freshness of birdsong, breathe in the springtime, embrace warmth of friendship and lock in the love.
Look to the future clickety, stoically……….Hope
