Six Amblers enjoyed a two-day trip walking approximately 11 miles along the Tiverton canal in May with an overnight stop at the local Premier Inn. The walk was planned and organised by Barbara Schofield.
On day 1, following an early start in Tavistock and with backpacks containing everything they needed for the walk and an overnight stay, they arrived at Tiverton Park Railway Station. Barbara had arranged for relatives to meet them, take away their overnight gear and get them to the start point on the towpath near Sampford Peverell, where the first day’s walk of 7 miles began.
Apart from a few brisk showers the walkers enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the the well kept but scenic canal tow path, stopping for a lunch stop en route and ending up with a well earned meal and a glass or two of wine at a local hostelry before a well-earned nights sleep.
After breakfast, the walkers were taken to Loudwells to complete the second part of the walk, approximately 4 miles, along a scenic and
less manicured, more rural part of the canal where swans with cygnets, ducks and ducklings and moorhens were flourishing in their natural habitats. They navigated a tree blown across the towpath by the recent bad weather and learnt from a local about a horse drawn canal barge trip that operated along that part of the canal.
The trip was hassle free thanks to their fabulous ‘sherpas’ who collected them at the end of the walk and took them to Tiverton Park Railway station for the onward trip to Plymouth and home. A wonderful 2 days, full of fun and lots of laughs.
