We are a very friendly group, who like to walk at a pace that gives us time to enjoy and appreciate our surroundings.
If you would like to join us, we would be very happy to welcome you.
The Amblers, pictured recently in their trendy sunhats at The Minions, have some interesting walks planned for July and August.
On Monday 1st July, Imogen Monk is leading a circular walk of approximately 3.5m over varied terrain – mostly tarmac and paths, starting at the village of Clearbrook. There will be a stop to enjoy a coffee (please bring your own). This is a pretty straightforward walk.
On Monday 8th July, David Anthony will be introducing a new walk on grassy moorland tracks, beyond Dartmeet. There are some archaeological remains to view along the way and ascent of both tors, but nothing strenuous. Views are expected and the walk is weather dependent as it is exposed. Duration about 2.5 to 3 miles.
On Monday 15th July, Cliff Wilkins will be leading a short flat walk on grass.
On Monday 22nd July, Barbara Schofield will be leading a pretty linear walk through the Maristow estate to Lopwell commencing from the gates on Roborough Down. The walk is flat and downhill through fields and woodland and is apporoximately 3 miles. Bring bus passes and a sandwich, as if the weather is fine, walkers will have a stop at Lopwell Dam.
On Monday 29th July, Jean Quartley will be leading a walk commencing at the Simmons Park car park in Okehampton. From here it will be a gentle walk through part of the park gardens on tarmac and then ascending a series of steps to the road leading to Okehampton Station. There will be a coffee stop at the station buffet (for those who haven’t brought their own refreshments). This is a linear walk of approximately 2-3 miles.
On Monday 5th August, Elizabeth Watkins will be leading a walk to Doe Tor Farm and waterfall. This is a linear walk of approximately 3 miles to the ruins of Doe Tor Farm, mostly following tracks with no big hills to climb. Coffee stop en route.
On Monday 12th August, Anne Dicker will be leading a linear walk near Cadover Bridge along grassy moorland tracks. Coffee stop at the rock. This walk is weather permitting, as it is exposed, but there are lovely views. Approximately 2.5-3 miles.
On Monday 19th August, Valerie Hamer will be leading a walk at Weir Quay through Hanging Cliff Woods.
On Monday 26th August (Bank Holiday) A short local walk to be organised if there is sufficient interest.
Walkers please note – Come prepared with suitable footwear, protective/waterproof clothing and a drink. Weather in Devon all year round is variable, so please check the weather forecast in advance and be prepared. We will always identify the length of the walk and any specific hazards in advance.
Dog walkers are reminded to be aware of potential issues if the proposed walk risks encountering cattle or sheep and to keep dogs on a lead in relevant areas.
If you have any questions or doubts about the walk, please contact the Group Leader, Imogen Monk.
