By 2025, traditional landline phones using 100-year-old technology are set to be switched off in favour of a digital network – Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP). This technology allows you to make voice calls using a broadband connection instead of a regular (or analogue) phone line. Many of us in Tavistock are already on this sytem, but what does it mean?
If you are already on the digital network – it means that if there is a power cut, you will now lose both internet and phone connectivity.
The good news is – Vulnerable customers of BT or other providers, can ask for back-up options if power is lost and they lose both telephone and internet connectivity.
1. Your network provider can provide you with a Hybrid Phone which works as a mobile phone should you lose your phone connection. The phone has its own battry and also a SIM card. There is no charge for this, but you must be in an area with a mobile signal.
2. If you have no mobile signal in your area and you are using the internet, you can apply for a Battery Back-Up unit which plugs into your internet hub and it will keep you powered up even if there is a power cut. A battery powered phone can be supplied.
3. If you don’t have internet, but you have a landline phone, the exchange can make the necessary changes for you without any new equipment and keep your landline phone connected in the event of a power cut.
Points to Note
Initially, BT will not be proactively switching customers to the digital network (where this information is available) if
- They have a healthcare pendant
- They only use a landline
- They have no mobile signal
- They have already disclosed any additional needs
What do do
Talk to your provider. If its BT, they can be contacted on 150 on your landline phone and ask for Customer Services. BT are committed to provide additional support to customers over 70. Whoever your provider is, they can assist with the necessary changes at no cost.
