19 members braved the early start and very wet Somerset weather in a recent visit to Bishops Palace in Wells.
We hadn’t booked a guided tour in advance, but were very lucky that due to the inclement weather, the resident guide Melanie was free when we arrived and we were able to enjoy an hour’s tour of the Palace.
The Palace remains at the centre of local life in Wells as it has been for over 800 years and the Bishops continue to hold prominent positions in english life. On display were robes worn by the current Bishop at the recent coronation of Charles III.
And the Palace keeps relevant and up to date by hosting local fairs and activities and is a very popular wedding venue. Its also used extensively for films and Melanie advised us to look out for Season 3 of Wolf Hall which was filmed in the Palace.

The gardens, 14 acres of them, were not seen at their best but many members braved the weather to walk round them and were intrigued by the statues, loved the water garden and the planting.
Definitely worth a visit at any time and as its in the heart of Wells, its a short stroll to the Cathedral and into the town.
